RacePrint™

Data sources and credits

RacePrint is built on public trail, road, and elevation data from government agencies. We credit every source we use and note where we have changed it. Thank you to the land managers and data teams who make this possible.

Not for navigation

RacePrint shows which public trails resemble the climbs and descents of a race. It is not a navigation or route-finding tool.

  • Trail data may be incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate.
  • Conditions change: closures, washouts, snow, fire, and road access.
  • Terrain match and coverage describe elevation similarity only. They don't rate safety, difficulty, surface, or legal access.

Before every run, check with the agency that manages the trail, carry a map and the right gear, and use your own judgment. See before you head out.

How we change source data

RacePrint combines trails from the sources below, removes duplicates, joins same-named pieces, splits long trails into stretches, recomputes elevation from USGS data, and picks a start point for each trail. The trails you see may differ from each original source. Errors in the result are ours, not the source agency's.

Trail data

USDA Forest Service

Trails, recreation sites (trailheads), and motor vehicle use data on national forest land. U.S. government data. Trail data: USDA Forest Service.

Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO)

State, county, city, and community-forest trails in Washington, from the Washington State Trails Database Hub, provided by the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office.

The data included in this map was provided by land managers from local, state, and federal organizations across Washington State. The data is as complete and accurate as possible, but some inconsistencies and inaccuracies inherently exist. This map is for informational purposes only. Do not use for navigation or route finding.

Utah Geospatial Resource Center (UGRC)

Roads, elevation, and maps

  • U.S. Census Bureau, TIGER/Line roads — street start points in Oregon and Washington. U.S. government data; RacePrint selects named local roads near trail ends.
  • U.S. Geological Survey, 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) — elevation for race and trail terrain fingerprints. Elevation data: U.S. Geological Survey.
  • Race course files — the race profile you match against, uploaded by you or published by a race director with permission.
  • Mapbox and OpenStreetMap — the background map. © Mapbox, © OpenStreetMap contributors, shown on every map. OpenStreetMap data is used for the background map only, not for trail matching.
